Merlin

If you’ve ever wondered what a cross between a falcon and a pigeon looks like, then you can look at a Merlin and find out. This bird which carries the name of a wizard is the UK’s smallest bird of prey. It’s only 25-30cm long with its wings spanning 50-62cm.Merlin usually eats smaller birds and the male (125-234g) is lighter than the female (164-300g).

You’re more likely to spot them in the north of Britain and Ireland, but in the winter they migrate south for warmer weather along with other Icelandic breeding birds. Unfortunately, Merlins faced a population disaster in the late 20th century and they’re still recovering from it.

Merlins are somewhat monogamous and they usually breed during May/June. They look for a mate once they reach their first birthday and typically lay 3 to 5 eggs. Merlins also have a great relationship with humans.

They were a popular choice for falconry in medieval Europe. Merlins have a long and square-shaped tail with broad wings that pierce the air like an airplane. They hold their wings close when gliding. So if you want to spot a Merlin, look for these features.
