Osprey

Ominous to fish and glorious to the eye, Osprey is a unique white hawk with brown wings. Ospreys nest on trees and feed on fish in rivers. Hence, their other names are river hawk, sea hawk, and fish hawk.

They usually venture on shorelines and waterways looking for the perfect prey. Then they dive into the water with outstretched feet to catch a live fish. Like most of their peers, Ospreys reside in North America and migrate south during cold seasons.

During the 15 to 20 years they live, Ospreys fly more than 160,000 miles to migrate to more pleasant homes. Once they’re 3 or 4 years old, they begin looking for a mate.

They usually breed in September–October and lay 2 to 4 eggs each time. Ospreys can fly up to 80 miles per hour (128 km/h). If you’re ever near open waters filled with fish, listen for chirping or whistling sounds. You might find an Osprey zooming above you like a giant bullet in the sky.
