Wood duck

Known for their exotic glossy green head, Wood ducks are unique and easily recognizable among ducks. They have a green crested head, a chestnut breast, and a broad tail. Wood ducks love anywhere moist and full of woods. So marshes, beaver ponds, small lakes, swamps, and streams are where you can find them.

Wood ducks not only deviate in the color pattern but also show different behavior compared to other ducks. They perch on trees and build their nests there.

They also have no trouble soaring in mid-air. When Wood ducks move to water, they may remind of pigeons as they rock back and forth as they swim. Immersing their neck and heads, these ducks look for food underwater.

Wood ducks are often seen in groups of less than 20 members. They prefer a life of seclusion from other waterfowls.

A Wood duck has a size between a crow and a goose having 18.5-21.3 in (47-54 cm) in length and 16.0-30.4 oz (454-862 g) as their weight.

If you wish to see a Wood duck in real life, you can look for them throughout southern Canada and the U.S.
